First of all you should know what a screen burn problem actually looks like. It affects mainly AMOLED screens but it also affects LCDs as is evident with the Screen Burn issue on the Moto G4 Plus. So here is what it looks like.
Ghost image or screen/image burn-in are names given to a permanent discoloration of your smartphone’s screen caused by irregular pixel usage. The prolonged use of static images can create a permanent shadow or ghost of that image on the screen. This problem is more common than you think, and happens most often on AMOLED screens as said above (although LCD displays aren’t completely free of this bug).
Why it happens?
Before we can fix burned images, we need to understand why these images burn in the first place. LCDs and plasmas don’t suffer from burn-in as seriously as CRTs do, but static images can leave an imprint on both displays if left alone for too long. So why do they burn?
When a still image is showed for too long, the different phosphor components in each pixel wear out at different rates, leaving behind a ghost image. Plasmas can also suffer from phosphor deterioration. Plasma burning occurs when pixels on the screen become damaged due to long exposure; the phosphor loses its intensity and only shows the light that it was repeatedly fed: the still image. The screen ghost happens when phosphorus compounds that emit light to produce images lose their intensity with prolonged use. Moreover, the irregular use can “burn” an image onto the screen which will be visible all the time.
LCDs don’t technically suffer from burning, which is permanent. Instead, they suffer from image persistence, which is temporary. When a still image is shown for too long on an LCD, the crystals that display those colors “get stuck” in their spots. When the display tries to show a different color, the crystals want to stay in that spot so they don’t move enough, resulting in a color that’s slightly off from the intended color. That’s why you’ll see a ghost of the still image from before and this is exactly the issue in your Moto G4 Plus because of which the ghost images appear.

So how do you fix it?
There are many apps on the Play Store that claim to fix this issue and there are some ways you can fix both plasma burning and LCD image persistence. However, depending on the length and severity of the image burning, some displays may be beyond repair, so keep that in mind and don’t get your hopes up too fast.
The concept is simple: a sequence of primary colors is displayed on your device, restoring the “burnt” pixels. In fact, this was the original function of computer screen-savers: one dynamic image that appears when the screen is idle to makes the pixels “exercise” and ensure that the same area of display doesn’t remain constantly illuminated.
We used this app on our Moto G4 Plus and the results do not show immediately but is persistent over time. It is recommended you use the app for time for 4-5 hours at a stretch at a time for 4 to 5 days at night. Here are the steps.

- Keep a screenshot handy (Optional)
- Install and run it. Select on Let’s Start! and click on I accept.
- Select the time duration for which you want it to run. (Optional : browse for the screenshot)
- Tick “Use custom screenshot during repair” and hit Go and then Repair.
- Let the app do it’s job for the hours specified. This is best done at night when you might not need to use your phone for a couple of hours. In case you have to you can just tap the screen and hit back to stop the process and go back to doing what you have to.
