Twitter CEO says it will keep the 140 character limit.

RE/code’s once reported twitter was considering 10,000 character limit on tweets. You would see the usual 140 characters but there would have been an option to expand and see more. However in Jack Dorsey’s public appearance on The Today Show to celebrate Twitter’s 10th anniversary, he said that the 140 character limit is staying.

Dorsey responded by saying that the 140-character limit is “a beautiful constraint” and that Twitter “will never lose that feeling.” At the same time, he pointed out that users often share screenshots of text on Twitter, in part to get around the character limit, so he asked, “What if that text … was actually text? Text that could be searched. Text that could be highlighted.”

The host of The Today Show Matt Lauer asked him, “One hundred and forty characters. The limit: Is it staying? And if it’s going away, when?”

“It’s staying,” Dorsey replied. “It’s a good constraint for us, and it allows for of-the-moment brevity.”

Lauer: You’re not changing anything?

Dorsey: We’re changing a lot. We’re always going to make Twitter better.

So the 140 character limit is staying and we are happy about it. Twitter needs to be a professional short message and useful tool rather than a timehog that Facebook is. Share your views with us in the comments below.
