How to update to latest Lollipop .78 firmware on Zenfone 5 (from KitKat/Lollipop/Custom ROM)

In this tutorial we will learn how to upgrade to the latest Lollipop 3.23.40.78 firmware without any errors. The process is different given whether you have Kitkat, Lollipop or a Custom ROM and we will look into each method in detail. Before that you will need some downloads. Go ahead and get the files first.

Downloads :
1. Lollipop 3.23.40.78 firmware : WW | CHT | TW
2. Kitkat 2.22.40..54 firmware (Optional, required if you are upgrading from Custom ROM)
3. ADB 1.0.32 ( you have to have this for sideloading Lollipop firmware)

Now let’s look into the methods one by one :

1. Upgrading from CUSTOM ROM (CM12.1 or Resurrection ROM)

You will need to have the KitKat .54 firmware. If you have an older firmware of kitkat you can install that too and avoid another 700MB download.

You can use this video to go back to KitKat.

In case you are flashing an older firmware of KitKat make sure you check system update and upgrade to .54 KitKat OTA (97MB download over OTA)

After you have update to .54 kitkat firmware (either direct flashing or OTA), place the Lollipop .78 firmware zip file downloaded above into the internal storage of your phone (not inside any folder)

Reboot and your phone will ask for a System Update file detected notification, tap that and install. It will take some time to flash on it’s own and reboot.

In case you see no status bar and black background just do a factory reset and it will work fine.

2. Upgrading from KitKat Stock :

First of all check your build number whether you are on the latest .54 KitKat firmware.

If you are not check system update and update to .54 KitKat firmware (97MB download over OTA)

After you have update to .54 kitkat firmware, place the Lollipop .78 firmware zip file downloaded above into the internal storage of your phone (not inside any folder).

Reboot and your phone will ask for a System Update file detected notification, tap that and install. It will take some time to flash on it’s own and reboot.

3. Upgrading from Stock Lollipop firmware :

Place the Lollipop .78 firmware zip file downloaded above into the internal storage of your phone (not inside any folder).

Reboot and your phone will ask for a System Update file detected notification, tap that and install. It will take some time to flash on it’s own and reboot.
